Guwahati: An Assam Civil Service officer namely Saibur Rahman who was recently arrested by the Chief Minister's Vigilance Cell has been denied bail by the Gauhati High Court on Tuesday.

The officer was found to have possessed moveable and immoveable assets worth over Rs 6.38 crore. As per reports and the police, 95 per cent of the total assets under his possession were disproportionate to his source of income known to the investigating agency.

Rahman has been accused of acquiring huge properties by illegal means. Based on these allegations, the Chief Minister's office had ordered a probe.

An official statement said, “For the purpose of calculating income, assets and expenditure and to work out the value of disproportionate assets and the flow of acquisition of properties in possession of the suspect officer, the check period was taken from 23-6-2002 to 30-4-2021.”

"He owned assets that are out of sync with his legal sources of income…He was also unable to satisfactorily account for how he could amass the pecuniary resources/assets or properties disproportionate to his known sources of income,” the statement added.

A 92-paged charge sheet was also filed on Tuesday against Rahman.

Police sources said that the Vigilance team had filed a part charge sheet under sections 13 (1)(a)(b)/ 13 (2) of PC Act.
