GUWAHATI: A student of Pandu college in Guwahati, who had appeared for an examination at the Gauhati University's Economics department yesterday, has tested positive for the novel coronavirus today at the MMC hospital in Panbazar, Guwahati.

Priya Dey (22), a masters degree student at the Pandu college here, in a video said that she was in contact with many students at the examination centre, triggering fears of a transmission at the uni. She is currently under home isolation.

The Pandu college's examinations are often held at the Gauhati University, as there is a lack of enough space at the former.

The 22-year-old confirming the news in a video urged everyone to take all the necessary safety measures to arrest the spread of the pathogen.

She further requested the university authority to take frequent step regarding this and either postponed her exam or conduct it online in order to not waste a year in her education career.

Meanwhile, Gauhati Universdity officials have confirmed that they are sanitizing the campus in a bid to do 'damage control.'

They now face the tough task of making the centres 'fit' to hold the examination without reporting further outbreaks.

COVID-19 cases in Assam are again on the rise amid a countrywide outbreak of the 2nd wave of the virus, that has prompted several state governments to call for preventive measures such as lockdowns and night curfews.

According to the bulletin issued by the National Health Mission (NHM), the state currently has 1,023 active cases, while 2,15,790 people have recovered from the illness, including 68 patients on Thursday.
