SHILLONG: The Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) polls for a total of 29 MDC seats has begun today to decide the fates of 182 candidates who are in the fray.

Chief minister Conrad K Sangma cast his vote in West Garo Hills and urged those eligible to vote to ensure that they exercise their right.

“The poll to the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council is underway. Cast my vote in one of the polling stations in #WestGaroHills. I once again stress on those eligible to vote to ensure they exercise their right today,” CM Sangma tweeted after casting his vote.

Out of a total of 182 contesting candidates, 174 are males, and eight are female candidates.

There are at least 7, 43, 717 registered voters in the Council, with 3, 74, 441 males and 3, 69, 276 females.

As many as 953 polling stations are located throughout the 29 constituencies.

Tura constituency has the most voters (59, 816), while Rongrikimgre has the lowest number (13, 983).

While the ruling National People's Party (NPP) and the opposition Congress have candidates for all 29 MDC seats, the United Democratic Party (UDP) has candidates for 15 MDC seats and the BJP has candidates for 20 MDC seats.

Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma is contesting on an NPP ticket.
