Glacier bursts in Uttarakhand's Neeti Valley; flood alert sounded

UTTARAKHAND: The Uttarakhand government has sounded an alert following a glacier burst incident at Sumna, Neeti Valley near the India-China border in Chamoli district.

Confirming this, chief minister Tirath Singh Rawat tweeted: “Sumna, Niti Valley, has experienced a glacier eruption. In this regard, I've issued an alert.

I keep in contact with the district administration and the BRO on a regular basis.”

“The district administration has been tasked with gathering all available information on the incident. Orders have been issued to stop work at night in NTPC and other projects so that no untoward incident occurs,” he added.

According to the sources, the glacier burst due to heavy snowfall in the region. So far, no fatality or property damage has been confirmed.

A glacier burst incident occurred in Joshimath, Chamoli district, in February, causing a major flood in the Dhauli Ganga river and widespread devastation. Over 50 bodies were recovered and hundreds more have been declared missing.
