Goddess Durga Welcomed on Earth with Mantras on Mahalaya

New Delhi, September 28, 2019:

The state of Assam along with the rest of the country celebrated the very occasion ‘Mahalaya’ on Saturday.

On this day, people wake up at 4 am in the morning, tunes into the radio or pre-recorded recital of Mahisasura Mardini and invokes goddess Durga. This marks the beginning of the much-awaited Durga Puja.

On Mahalaya, it is believed that Goddess Durga descends on Earth.

In many parts of the country, people perform tarpan on Mahalaya to offer prayers to their ancestors.

The specialty of this day is that today, the ‘murti’ (idol) of goddess Durga is given her eyes which is termed as "Chokkhudaan" as the final touch.

Durga Puja starts from the seventh day after Mahalaya and ends on the tenth day of Dashami or Dussehra.

People across Guwahati, Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Mangaldoi and other districts celebrated the day with fervour and zeal.
