Kolkata, March 1, 2020:

The "Goli maaro saalo ko" (shoot the traitors) which gained notoriety in the aftermath of the peaceful protests against the nationwide Citizenship (Amendment) Act, with the ruling party's supporters calling for violence against dissenters, has again been echoed, this time in Kolkata.

Now, it has been reported that men carrying BJP party flags, were heard shouting the slogan en route to the Shahid Minar ground, the place earmarked for an Amit Shah rally.

When contacted, a senior officer of the Kolkata Police declined to comment anything on the incident, but said, "Strict action will be taken against anybody trying to disrupt the law and order situation in the city."

The slogan has come under immense scrutiny, as it calls for violence against dissenters and opposers of the Government's Citizenship Amendment law, that gives citizenship on the basis of religion: a first in India.

There has been a controversy over raising of such slogans during BJP rallies during Delhi Assembly polls and protests in favour of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) due to allegations that they provoke violence.

Yesterday, the controversial slogan was raised at the bustling Rajiv Chowk Metro Station in Delhi's Centre in broad daylight, Later, six persons were detained for raising the chant. Video footage of pro-CAA activists marching through Connaught Place in the heart of Delhi while shouting the slogan have also appeared on social media, with senior journalist poking Delhi Police for its apparent "inaction."
