DISPUR: Abdul Khaleque, Congress MP who represents the Barpeta Constituency in the Lok Sabha, today said that he is in favour of a "grand alliance" for the ensuing polls.
"It is true that we are in favour of a grand alliance instead of one comprising only the Congress and AIUDF parties," the MP disclosed to Inside Northeast.
Upon being asked about the possibility of an alliance with the AIUDF, Khaleque said that "it is hard to say."
"Ajmal Sir always says that there will be an alliance in the lead up to the poll, however, that has not been the case in the past. Therefore, we will have to wait for the party to take the final call," Khaleque stated.
Sushmita Dev on Tuesday said the All India Congress Committee is in the process of conducting a survey to understand the acceptability of an alliance between the two parties ahead of the polls.

The AIUDF leadership, however, has been pressing for an alliance in the lead up to the polls to defeat the ruling alliance led by the BJP.
A lobby inside the Assam Congress has been against an alliance with the AIUDF due to the party's lack of appeal in the Upper Assam region, but a faction has been gunning for an alliance to stand a better chance in the polls to be held later this year.
Tarun Gogoi, the veteran Congress leader who passed away last month, had spoken out in favour of aligning with the AIUDF, but his death seems to have derailed the process.
More recently, APCC Chief Ripun Bora said that the decision of an alliance will be taken by the party's leadership in New Delhi after considering all the pros and cons.
