IMPHAL: Thounaojam Brinda from Manipur has been conferred with the Great Indian Women Award (GIWA) 2021 for her "untiring efforts to control the menace of drug abuse in Manipur."

 

Onkareshwar Pandey, the chairperson of the GIWA organizing committee, congratulating Brinda, wrote, "You have been selected for the award under the category of The Great Indian woman Leader for your untiring efforts to control the menace of drug abuse in Manipur as a brave MPS officer and also for all your struggles in the life."

 

Pandey further stated that Brinda was shortlisted for the award "after a detailed assessment and selection process including leading women from different parts of the world."

 

"We are elated to recognize your great work and sincerely appreciate your dedicated efforts towards the progress of our nation," he added.

 

The GIWA awardees this year have been chosen from the US, UK, South Africa, Kenya, Mauritius, Trinidad, Guyana, Fiji, UAE, Thailand etc, and the winners include women who made remarkable contributions in the field of science, IT, law, business, journalism, social work, arts and culture.

 

Brinda on December 18 last returned the Chief Minister’s Gallantry Medal which was conferred on her on the occasion of the Patriots Day on August 13, 2018.

 

Brinda, however, returned the Chief Minister’s Gallantry Medal after a Special Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (ND&PS) Court acquitted BJP leader and former Chairman of Chandel Autonomous District Council (ADC) Lhukhosei Zou and six others in the multi-crore drug seizure case.

 

It needs mention here that on June 18, 2018, Th Brinda, who was then posted as an ASP with the Narcotic and Affairs of Border (NAB), led a raid at the official residence of Chandel ADC chairman Lhukhosei Zou in Imphal West and recovered contraband worth crores of rupees.

 

28 kilograms of amphetamine tablets (WY or Yaba tablets as commonly known) worth Rs 27 crores were seized during the raid from the BJP leader’s official residence.

 

Moreover, cash worth Rs 57,18,000 were also recovered during the raid.

 

One 0.32 prohibited bore (NPB) pistol along with 21 live rounds and a single-barrel rifle were also recovered.

 

Thounaojam Brinda was conferred the Chief Minister’s Police Medal for Gallantry on August 13, 2018, in recognition of her role in the drug seizure.
