GUWAHATI: B. Borooah College in Guwahati's Ulubari area has reported as many as 4 COVID-19 positive cases amid the second wave of the pandemic in Assam.

Talking to InsideNE, B.Barooah student leader Subhrajit Baruah, said: "I can confirm that as many as 4 people -- 3 students and an office employee -- have tested positive for the virus recently. The students had reportedly gone to attend a birthday party. They decided to get themselves tested after they contracted some of the symptoms."

Asked if the college authority is mulling closure of the college amid another spike, Baruah said that the ball is firmly in their court.

"Considering the circumstances, I think you have to consider closing down the college for the sake of the safety of students and faculty. However, it all depends on the higher authority and what they want. It seems like they are still going ahead with the tests but we will see...if the COVID-19 cases cross the 1,000 mark, all institutions have to be closed regardless," he said.

Assam Education Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday said all educational institutions, including schools, colleges, universities and hostels, would be closed as and when the COVID-19 positive cases in Kamrup Metropolitan district touch the 1000 mark in a day.

However, despite the detection of COVID-19 positive cases in several educational institutes, the district administration appears hesitant to close down the schools and colleges as the 1,000 figure mark is yet to be breached.

Yesterday, as many as 883 COVID-19 positive cases were detected in Guwahati city -- prompting speculations that the educations could see closure if there is a slight spike in cases.

India’s COVID-19 tally touched 1,62,63,695, with 3,32,730 new COVID-19 cases recorded over the past 24 hours, the world’s highest single-day spike.
