GUWAHATI: As an initiative by Relief Riders Guwahati, a team of cyclists from the city has come forward to help the needy and aged during the period of the COVID-19 crisis.

The team of cyclists will help the needy and aged by delivering essential items and medicines at their doorstep, free of cost.

While speaking with InsideNE, Arshel Akhter, Bicycle Mayor of Guwahati said, "Currently we are a team of 11 volunteers from different organizations and different parts of the city. We have started our service from today and even I have just completed my first delivery."

The practice of delivering essential goods by the Bicycle Mayors started in Bangalore last year during lockdown and Guwahati becomes the 8th city this year to follow the same footprint. There are several Bicycle Mayors in India who represent diverse locations each with their own unique challenges and opportunities for change showing how accelerating cycling progress can bring social, environmental and economic progress to any city, anywhere.

"As you can see recently many people are buying bicycles but mostly to focus on their health. But we want to show those people that what other perspectives of a cycle could be helpful to the society as well and encourage them to pursue the same," said Akhter.

Akhter added, "We want to do this without leaving any carbon footprint. So interested people aged from 18 to 60 years can join us as volunteers but they have to do it on a cycle. That is the whole motive."
