Guwahati Police Chief Deepak Kumar Replaced by Munna Prasad Gupta amid CAB Protests

In view of the rising protests against Citizenship Amendment Bill in Guwahati city of Assam, a major reshuffle in Assam Police been reported on Thursday, following complete breakdown of the law-and-order situation in the state.

Now, IPS officer Munna Prasad Gupta has been appointed as the new city police commissioner, replacing Deepak Kumar.

In lieu of this, GP Singh, the Inspector General of National Investigation Agency, India, has been deputed to Assam to oversee the L&O (Law and Order) situation across the state replacing Mukesh Agarwal.

On the other hand, Additional Director General of Police (Law & Order), Mukesh Agarwal, has been transferred and posted as Additional Director General of Police (CID) replacing L R Bisnoi.

Also, Additional Director General of Police (CID) L R Bisnoi, has been transferred and posted as Additional Director General of Police (TAP).

The notification came up in light of the increasing violence in state of Assam by the anti- Citizenship Amendment Bill protesters.

It has been reported that the protests have taken a violent turn in several parts of the region, and irate protesters clashed with security personnel, who had been deployed to restore law-and-order situation in the burning streets of Guwahati city. During the ensuing clashes between the forces, as many as 24 agitators have been arrested by the local authorities

Disregarding the curfew that had been imposed since 6:15 pm on Wednesday, almost a lakh descended on Latasil Playground at Uzanbazar area in Guwahati. People from all walks of life — including student leaders, intellectuals, actors, musicians — congregated at the field to voice their opposition to the Bill.
