Guwahati Police Commissioner Deepak Kumar said that the police department has braced itself to tackle any untoward happenings in the largest city of Assam as the city prepares to host Independence Day.

Speaking to Inside Northeast, the Commissioner said that all the security measures have been taken to ensure that Independence Day can be celebrated in the State. "We first determined where from dangers might come, whether there will be hoisting of black flags. We are also monitoring the railway tracks to ensure a situation of safety and security in the region. The entry and exit points of the city are being closely watched."

The Commissioner has also said that the volatile areas of the city have been determined and they are being patrolled by commandos. Moreover, the officers have been deployed to all the areas of the city. Moreover, a meeting was conducted yesterday to brief the police officers about the challenges.

Moreover, efforts are on to sensitise the parade grounds and CRPF jawans are conducting regular 'anti=sabotage' checkings. The dog squads are also making routine rounds on the parade ground, the Commissioner said. "Traffic plans have also been made and the police personnel have been informed about their responsibilities", he said, and added that "we are hoping that the Independence Day program is a grand success."

Speaking about the threat posed by ULFA, he said that the ULFA will no doubt try to alert people to its mischief, but promised that the police force is upto the task of thwarting ULFA's nefarious plans. "They are greatly weakened, thus, they are desperate to make their presence felt", headded.
