Heroin valued at about Rs 55.8 lakh seized in Aizawl; 3 held

AIZAWL: The Assam Rifles on Wednesday seized 124 gram of heroin valued at about Rs 55.8 lakh from Thenzawl area here and apprehended three persons in this connection.

The operation was carried out by a joint team of Assam Rifles, Mizoram excise and narcotics department based on specific information.

Cheap and easy availability of drugs has a wide impact on the society in the state, thus having the highest percentage of drug addicts.

Mizoram has been facing drug menace since 1984 and a total of 1,645 people have died due to drug abuse till date. In 2020 alone, 67 people died and 268 people were arrested on drug-related charges.

The state is also used as a corridor to transship drugs to other parts of the country.

Earlier this month, 75 gram of heroin valued at about Rs 33.75 lakh was seized at Hunthar Veng in Aizawl.

On February 25, 762 gram of heroin, with a market value of about Rs 3.4 crore, was seized from Hnahthial in Lunglei district.

On February 16, Assam Rifles and Customs department officials seized 68.6 gram of heroin valued at about Rs 27.32 lakh in the state.

On February 15, 237.5 gram of heroin, valued at about Rs 95 lakh, was seized in the state.

Mizoram shares over 80 per cent of border with Bangladesh and Myanmar with the Myanmar border stretching 510 km. It is also a hilly state with almost 89 per cent of the land being mountainous.
