AIZAWL: The Assam Rifles has seized 75 grams of heroin valued at Rs 33.75 lakh from Hunthar Veng area here and apprehended five person, including two women.

The operation was carried out by a joint team of Assam Rifles, Mizoram excise and narcotics department based on specific information.

Cheap and easy availability of drugs has a wide impact on the society in the state thus having the highest percentage of drug addicts.

The state is also used as a corridor to transship drugs to other parts of the country.

Mizoram has been facing drug menace since 1984 and a total of 1,645 people have died due to drug abuse till date. In 2020 alone, 67 people have died and 268 people were arrested on drug-related charges.

Yaba tablets, produced in the Wa state of Myanmar and which are in high demand in other parts of the country, are smuggled through Mizoram.

Mizoram shares over 80 per cent of border with Bangladesh and Myanmar with the Myanmar border stretching 510 km. It is also a hilly state with almost 89 per cent of the land being mountainous.
