GUWAHATI: International calibre athlete Hima Das was on Friday handed the appointment letter to the post of Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Assam, at a grand ceremony held at the Sarusajai stadium in Guwahati.
“A sportsperson has been appointed to a post like DSP directly and it has become possible only because of Sarbananda Sonowal,” Lakhya Konwar, the General Secretary of the Assam Olympic Association, said at today’s ceremony.
Ceremonial presentation of appointment letter to Hima Das, International Athlete, as Deputy Superintendent of Police, Assam, and distribution of appointment letters to 597 newly selected Sub-Inspectors of Police was held today at the Sarusajai stadium in Guwahati city.
Chief Minister of Assam Sarbananda Sonowal graced the occasion as Chief Guest and Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma graced the occasion as Guest of Honour. Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta, the Director General of Police (DGP), Assam, was also present.
Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal chaired a meeting of his cabinet on Wednesday night where a decision was taken to appoint World Championship sprinter Hima Das as a Deputy Superintendent of Police in the state.
The cabinet also decided to amend the integrated sports policy of the state by appointing sportspersons as Class-I and Class-II officers in different departments of the state like Police, Excise, Transport etc, government spokesman and Industry minister Chandra Mohan Patowary told reporters.
It was decided that Das will be appointed as a DSP rank officer in the Assam police and medal winners in Olympics, Asian Games and Commonwealth Games will be appointed as Class-I officers.
