GUWAHATI: Assam’s Finance, Health, and Education minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday inaugurated a new Radiation Oncology Block at the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital’s (GMCH) Cancer Hospital on the occasion of the 4th anniversary of the celebrations of the State Cancer Institute.

Minister Sarma took to Twitter and wrote, “As State Cancer Institute at GMC completes four yrs today, another feather is added to its cap with the addition of New Radiation Oncology Block with Tomotherapy. Pleased to have inaugurated it today. It is another step towards strengthening health services in Assam.”

The new radiation oncology block is the first of its kind in Northeast and is equipped with high-end radiation therapy machine worth Rs 28.6 crore with the latest technology of Helical Tomotherapy. Very soon two more such machines will be added to the block, the Minister says.

 

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony Sarma said, “We have installed a new Radiation machine which will cost around Rs. 28 crores. It is of an advanced variety and would help in enhancing the treatment for the people who are suffering from cancer. Now people can avail the treatment of tomotherapy at GMCH staying here and saving money.”

During his speech, Sarma further stated that a second line of the radiation unit has also been inaugurated at the GMCH.
