GUWAHATI: Moments after Assam Finance Minister Ajanta Neog tabled the annual Budget for fiscal year 2021-22 in the Assembly, chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma took to Twitter to laud it as a "pro-poor" budget.

Biswa Sarma wrote in a tweet that this "pro-poor" AssamBudget 2021-22 will greatly strengthen the COVID-19-ravaged economy of Assam.

"Many path-breaking initiatives in the budget will also drive economic revival post-pandemic & help realise Adarniya PM Shri Narendra Modi ji's dream of Atmanirbhar Bharat," he wrote.

"The #AssamBudget2021 is an embodiment of our promise to fulfill the aspirations of every Assamese. I commend my colleague Smt Ajanta Neog," Biswa Sarma tweeted. for her unwavering commitment to uplift every section of our society through this budget and boost the double-engine of development," he tweeted again.

Responding to a query at a presser held on the Assembly premises afterwards, Sarma said that this budget is aimed at the middle classes and will help tide them over during the crisis period as it exempts them from taxes.

He also pointed to the fact that the budget seeks to break the 'digital divide' by gifting children with smart phones so that they can participate in 'online classes.'

Asked about the drone survey to track encroachments, Sarma clarified that Indian nationals who have settled in the hilly areas have nothing to fear.

This new initiative has been started to ensure that there are no new encroachments, Sarma said.

Sarma said all the Ministers and MLAs will take a 'sankalp' to finish the work outlaid in the Budget in a timebound manner.
