Aizawl, November 19, 2018:

The ruling Congress in poll-bound Mizoram on Monday described BJP leaders Himanta Biswa Sarma and Ram Madhav as “schemers”, indicating about the duo’s art of political engineering.

“Himanta Biswa Sarma and Ram Madhav are schemers. They look innocent but they are dangerous,” Mizoram Congress spokesman Maliana told reporters in Aizawl.

He also said that the BJP was trying to grab power in the Christian-majority state through the “backdoor”.

Sarma was quick to give a response. “We will have it through the front door”. He also spoke about springing a surprise by saying that the BJP would win seats not just in the areas of ethnic minorities such as the Brus and the Reangs but also in constituencies where the Mizos are in a large majority.

“We have friends in the Congress and the MNF. If there is any shortfall (post-poll), we have enough friends in both the parties,” he said.

For the past few days, the Congress has been belligerent in its attack of the BJP for the reason that the saffron party might make it difficult for the ruling party post-election.

“Beware of false prophets who come to you in sheep’s clothing but inwardly are ravening wolves,” Congress leader and former Goa Chief Minister Luizinho Faleiro said about the BJP recently.

For the BJP, the focus is more on ousting Lal Thanhawla’s Congress government than trying to win too many seats. The BJP just wants its presence in a non-Congress government; even if it is with one or two seats.

The BJP knows for sure that its chances are only at the four-five Bru-Chakma seats. As such, the party has been vigorously campaigning there. On Sunday, Sarma visited some relief camps of the Bru refugees in Tripura to try and keep them in a good humour ahead of the November 28 polls.
