GUWAHATI: Assam's newly-elected chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today called on Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu at Upa-Rashtrapati Nivas today.

Rameswar Teli, Minister of State for Food Processing Industries was also present.

Himanta Biswa Sharma apprised the Vice President of the various developmental initiatives of the state and the progress being made.

According to officials, the Vice President expressed his happiness at these developmental initiatives undertaken by the BJP-led government in Assam.

This comes days after the state government decided to increase the daily wage of around 10 lakh tea plantation workers by Rs 38, officials said.

The issue of higher wages for around 10 lakh tea garden workers in the state was one of the biggest poll issues before the three-phase Assembly elections were held in the state in March-April.

Sarma, since coming to power, has also announced another key initiative -- the Chief Minister’s Shishu Sewa scheme.

This scheme is meant to benefit children who lose their parents to COVID-19 amid the steep rise in the number of cases in Assam in the ‘second wave’ of the pandemic.

At the same time, the government is beginning preparations to implement the flagship 'Arunodoy' scheme in the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR).

Biswa Sharma on Friday reviewed the implementation of Orunodoi and preparedness for the re-launch of the  Swami Vivekananda Assam Youth Empowerment Yojana (SVAYEM) schemes in the BTR.

State government ministers UG Brahma and Ashok Singhal, Bodoland Territorial Council chief Pramod Boro, MP Dilip Saikia, and MLA and chief minister's political secretary Jayanta Malla Baruah were present during the meeting held at Assam Administrative Staff College in Guwahati.

Various aspects of the two schemes were discussed in the meeting, the implementation of which was earlier postponed due to assembly elections in the state.
