GUWAHATI: Assam minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today announced the closure of all the educational educations in the Kamrup (Metro) district after COVID-19 cases finally breached the 1,000 case mark.

Out of a total of 3,137 cases reported across Assam, Kamrup(M) registered 1,153 cases and 15 deaths.

"With cases in Kamrup Metro exceeding 1000, I’ve advised DC to shut down all educational institutions including hostels for 15 days for now. All other districts, where the numbers reach a threshold that require such measures, shall follow suit," the Minister wrote in a tweet.

Earlier, Sarma had said that all educational institutions, including schools, colleges, universities and hostels, would be closed as and when the COVID-19 positive cases in Kamrup Metropolitan district touch the 1000 mark in a day.

“We have decided in a meeting today that if the COVID-19 positive cases in Kamrup Metro district touch the 1000-mark, the district administration will take a decision on shutting down educational institutions and hostels. However, the SOPs, which allow 50 percent attendance in educational institutions (from Class VI onwards), will continue to be in effect till then,” Sarma said.

It may be noted that the Kamrup Metropolitan district has had the highest number of COVID positive cases since the fresh surge in the last week of March this year.

In Assam, physical classes for students of Class 6 and above have been allowed with 50 per cent attendance in districts reporting over 100 active COVID-19 positive cases.
