Guwahati, August 19, 2019:

The Hindu Jagaran Mancha (HJM), a socio-cultural organisation, staged protests across Assam demanding 100 percent re-verification of the National Register of Citizens (NRC).

Ahead of the final publication of NRC, the organisation has demanded "100% correct documents" with the inclusion of the names of all the indigenous people and exclusion of all the suspected foreigners. Protests were held outside NRC offices in Kokrajhar, Tinsukia, Lanka, and Guwahati, among others.

Meanwhile, while ruling out 're-verification', the apex court also ruled out the confusing suggestions mentioned in Paragraph 7 of the document submitted by Prateek Hajela. According to the suggestions, children born after December 3, 2004, are not eligible to be included in the NRC list, if any of the parents is a DV (Doubtful Voter), DF (Declared Foreigner) or PFT (persons with cases pending at Foreigners Tribunals).

The group has stated that it has been monitoring the NRC updation process closely over the past few days. It has expressed concerns over the confusion created when the Supreme Court ruled out the reopening and re-verification of the NRC.

According to HJM, if the NRC is published on August 31, it will result in a 'huge loss' for the Assamese society as the final document may include the names of lakhs of Bangladeshis, thus depriving the genuine citizens of India, along with the original inhabitants of Assam.

The group has cited concerns over the recent declaration by State Coordinator Prateek Hajela that 27 percent of re-verification has already been done, but alleged that the general public is unaware of the process. In such circumstances, the Hindu Jagaran Mancha has demanded a 100 percent re-verification of the NRC.

The final publication of the National Register of Citizens is due on August 31. The deadline has created a panic situation across Assam, especially for the ones whose names have not yet been included in the first and second drafts.
