GUWAHATI: Assam's Finance, Health, and Education Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today said that he consumed the food at a government function. It is suspected that the people fell sick after consuming the packet lunches served at the inaugural programme of the first academic session of the MBBS course. One person has reportedly died.

 

 

Addressing media persons here today, Biswa Sarma said, "At least 28 people have been released after the suspected Diphu food poisoning, while 145 people are all hospitalized. All are doing fine thus far. I myself ate the same food served from the same kitchen."

 

 

What is the Diphu food poisoning incident?

 

 

Inside Northeast sources have informed that at least 145 persons have been admitted to the Diphu Medical College and Hospital and 30 persons discharged after consuming food at an event attended by the Chief Minister of Assam.

 

 

Tuliram Ronghang, the CEM of KAAC, rushed to the hospital to take Stock of the situation and enquire about the patients' health.

"Doctors are doing their best to save their patients and they are responding well to the treatment," Ronghang told newsmen, adding, "Many of them are suffering from diarrhea. Food samples have been sent to the laboratory for mandatory checkups and a high-level probe will be ordered."

 

 

Chief Minister Sarbananda Sanowal, as well as ministers Himanta Biswa Sarma and Pijush Hazarika, were present at Diphu yesterday to launch several developmental schemes as well.

 

 

They launched the MBBS course at the newly built Diphu Medical College (DMC), raining the total number of Seats in the hospital to 1,000.
