NALBARI: After Badruddin Ajmal raked up a controversy stating the BJP government would deomolish 3500 mosques across India, Assam finance minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today countered asking if the Congress-All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) alliance comes to power in Assam will the Hindus be able to go to temples.

Addressing BJP’s Bijay Sankalp Samabesh at Swahid Mukunda Kshetra here, the North East Democratic Alliance convenor said: “Ajmal said if BJP comes to power, Muslims will not be able to go to mosques. I would like to ask Ajmal if Congress and AIUDF come to power, can the Hindus visit temples?”

Drawing a parallel between Mughal invader Babar and Ajmal, the senior BJP leader said: “Invaders like Babur had destroyed our deity Ram's temple. Sultan's knight Kalapahar attacked our Kamakhya temple. And now in modern days, Ajmal's force is attacking our Sankardev's birthplace Batodrava Thaan. Satra lands were illegally occupied during the Congress rule which we have managed to evict.”

AIUDF supremo Ajmal had recently said in an election rally in Dhubri district that the BJP had demolished Babri Masjid and that if BJP continues to be in power about 3500 mosques will be demolished. He also said that the BJP government was trying to impose a ban on burqa.

Challenging Congress state president Ripun Bora and Ajmal, Sarma said: “People of Assam elected us with a responsibility to safeguard our Jaati, Maati, Bheti … We worked every day for our Jaati, Maati, Bheti and the people … I want to tell Ajmal and Ripun Bora that till the day BJP is working, Congress-AIUDF cannot even enter 100 km radius of Dispur.”

Giving a clarion call in a highly polarizing speech in presence of Union home minister Amit Shah at the RSS bastion, the minister said: “This election is like do or die for us. Some people in Assam want to build Miya school, some want to write Miya poetry and some want to build Miya museum in Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakhetra. I want to tell them that till the day BJP is alive, Assam will only hail Shankardeva and Madhavdeva. We will not allow for a Miya school or museum.”

Sharma also lashed out at the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) for backing newly floated party Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) saying: “All these parties want to bring Babur rule back to Assam. But till the day BJP's Hanumans are alive in Assam, there will be only Ram … These parties have clandestine relations with Ajmal.”

“The AASU has been agitating during the prime minister’s visit. I want to ask their leaders when people were fighting against COVID-19 in 2020, did you come out to donate even a bottle of plasma? Our BJP workers helped the needy at that time. Where was Samujjal Bhattacharjya that time, where was Lurinjyoti Gogoi that time? Were you at the museum? Did anybody see any of the AASU leaders during COVID crisis?
