GUWAHATI: Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today said that Independent MLAs will only get 2 minutes to speak in the Assembly.

Sarma, apparently taking a jibe at his bete noire Akhil Gogoi, who won from the Sivasagar Assembly Constituency, said that the 'democracy' cannot be "turned into an autocracy."

"The Congress will get one hour, BJP will get two hours, and the Independent will get three minutes. Can speak whatever can be said in that time. Will participate in the Budget and everything else. We will not oppose democracy, but democracy cannot be hijacked -- democracy cannot be an autocracy," he said addressing a presser here today.

Sarma said that the attitude of "I will speak and everyone will have to listen to me" shall not be tolerated, taking another jibe at the outspoken Gogoi.

"We will not be there at the Assembly to applaud," Biswa Sarma further added before departing the conference.

Notably, Raijor Dal leader Akhil Gogoi is the only MLA who won as an independent in this year's election.
