Guwahati, March 22, 2019:

India has been embarrassingly placed 140th out of 156 countries as per the seventh annual United Nations World Happiness report which was released on Thursday. The report ranks the countries on six key variables: income, freedom, healthy life expectancy, social support, generosity and absence of corruption.

In last year’s report, India had ranked 133rd. It is to be mentioned that Finland has topped the list for the second year in a row whereas Sudan has been ranked the lowest at 156th.

It is to be mentioned that India ranked 117th (in the 2015 report) when PM Modi first came to power but has slipped 23 positions in the ensuing years. Also remarkable is the fact that the BJP slogan “achche din ayenge” (good days will come) is not heard anymore as we head to the Lok Sabha elections. The question that is still on the minds of the citizenry at large is: when will the good days finally come? And why is it that we are unhappier than we were before?
