India records massive spike of over 40,000 COVID-19 cases in last 24 hours

With more than 40,000 fresh COVID-19 cases reported in the last 24 hours, India now has 1.11 million infections. As many as 681 COVID-19 casualties were reported in the country, taking the toll to 27,497. There are over 7 lakh recoveries, while nearly 4 lakh are still active cases. This is the first time that India has reported more than 40,000 infections. The recovery rate stands at 62.61 percent.

The death toll is now 27497, as per data released by the Union Health Ministry. Active COVID-19 cases in India stand at 390459 while 700087 have been cured or discharged so far.

Among the states, Maharashtra is the first state to cross 6 thousand deaths. It has recorded 310455 corona cases with 169569 cured, 11854 deaths, and 129032 active cases. The western state is followed by Delhi and Tamil Nadu. Delhi has corona 122793 cases with 103134 cured, 3628 deaths, and 16031 active cases. Tamil Nadu has 170693 positive cases with 117915 cured, 2481 deaths 50297 active cases. Gujarat with 48355 COVID-19 cases, so far, has 34901 have been cured, 2142 deaths, and 11312 active cases.

Meanwhile, Assam recorded 1018 new COVID-19 cases on July 19th, 2020 taking the total to 23,999, state Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma informed. Of 1018 confirmed COVID-19 cases, 577 were reported in Guwahati alone.

Of 23,999 total confirmed COVID-19 cases, 7916 are active and 16023 have been cured and discharged so far while 57 died due to the infection.

Four patients succumbed to COVID-19 on July 19th, 2020 taking the toll to 57. The deceased are Pramod Chandra Sarma (62) of Kamrup Metro, Binapani Das (78) of Kamrup Metro, S K Wagle (46) of Cachar and Prasanta Saikia (74) of Tinsukia.

Assam reported highest ever spike in COVID-19 cases on July 17th, 2020. It reported 1218 new COVID-19 cases including 570 from Guwahati alone.

The state crossed 20,000 mark in COVID-19 cases on July 16th, 2020 while crossed the 1000-mark in 60 days. It reported the first case on March 31st, 2020.

Globally, the pandemic has infected nearly 14.5 million people, with 6-lakh casualties. The United States continues to be the worst-affected followed by Brazil, India, Russia and South Africa.
