India reports 77 rape cases, 80 murders daily in 2020: NCRB report

NEW DELHI: According to the latest report of the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) released on Wednesday, India recorded an average of 80 murders and 77 rape cases per day in 2020.

India reported a total of 29,193 deaths in 2020, with Uttar Pradesh topping the list of states, with an average of 80 murders per day in 2020.

Meanwhile, 77 rape cases were reported on average every day across the country, for a total of 28,046 such cases.

According to the NCRB data,1% increase over a total of 28,915 murders in 2019, with a daily average of 79 killings throughout the year.

According to the data, Uttar Pradesh reported the most murder cases in 2020, with (3,779), followed by Bihar (3,150), Maharashtra (2,163), Madhya Pradesh (2,101), and West Bengal (1,948).

In addition, according to the year's data, Delhi had 472 murder cases in 2020.

Meanwhile, 3,71,503 cases of crime against women were reported across the country last year, a decrease of 8.3 percent from the previous year's total of 4,05,326 cases, according to the data.

The data shows the COVID-19 outbreak and pandemic-induced lockdowns, there were 28,046 cases of rape involving 28,153 victims out of the total cases of crimes against women in 2020.

According to NCRB data, Rajasthan had the most rapes (5,310) in India in 2020, followed by Uttar Pradesh (2,769), Madhya Pradesh (2,339), and Maharashtra (2,061).

In 2020, the crime rate per lakh women population is 56.5, compared to 62.3 in 2019.

A total of 1,11,549 cases of "cruelty by husband or relatives" were registered in the year 2020, while 62,300 cases of kidnapping and abduction were registered.

There were 85,392 cases of assault to outrage modesty and 3,741 cases of attempted rape in addition to rape.

However, according to the data, kidnapping and abduction cases decreased by more than 19% in 2020 compared to 2019.

In 2020, there were 84,805 reported cases of kidnapping and abduction, compared to 1,05,036 in 2019.

On the other hand, a total of 1,28,531 cases of crime against children were registered during 2020.

In 2020, the crime rate per lakh children's population is 28.9, down from 33.2 in 2019.
