India sees biggest spike with over 77,000 new COVID cases

India sees a massive single-day rise in the COVID-19 cases with over 77,000 new cases in the last 24 hours. Coronavirus cases in India have crossed the 33 lakh-mark with the death toll going past 61,000.

Meanwhile, 1,057 new deaths brought the country’s overall death count to 61,529.
India has the third-highest number of virus infections in the world, after the United States and Brazil.

According to the health ministry’s dashboard at 8 am, there are 742,023 active cases. With 60,177 people discharged between Thursday and Friday morning, the number of recovered patients has surged to 2,583,948, and the recovery rate to 76.27%.

The government said on Thursday nine states and a Union territory have reported 89% of the deaths in the country in the last two weeks and that they need to have continued and rigorous vigil so as to contain the spread of infection as well as take steps to reduce fatalities. Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Telangana, Gujarat, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Andhra Pradesh, and Jammu & Kashmir are among them.

Maharashtra on Thursday reported 14,857 fresh cases of coronavirus infection, taking the case tally in the state to 7,33,568. Maharashtra is followed by Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka.
Tamil Nadu, the second worst-hit state, reported 5,981 fresh COVID-19 cases and the total count has now shot up to 4,03,24.
Andhra Pradesh reported 92 deaths and 10,621 new cases of coronavirus on Thursday. The total number of COVID-19 cases in the state is now 3,93,090.

The US is by far the hardest-hit country in the world in terms of both the number of cases and deaths. The country passed the grim milestone of 1,80,000 coronavirus deaths on Thursday.
