India to roll out vaccination for all above-45 people from April 1

NEW DELHI: India is set to roll out the next phase of the Covid-19 vaccination drive from April 1, which will see people above 45 years of age, including those without morbidities, being inoculated against the pathogen.

Union minister Prakash Javadekar said that there will be no requirement for medical certificates supporting co-morbidity conditions, as the government had previously stipulated for the second phase of vaccination.

Apart from medical professionals and frontline workers, all people over the age of 60 and those over 45 with comorbidities have been vaccinated in the previous two drives.

Javadekar also stated that there is no shortage of Covid-19 vaccine doses in India and encouraged all eligible individuals to register and get vaccinated as soon as possible.

The minister said that India has so far vaccinated 4.85 crore people.

32.54 people have received vaccines in the last 24 hours.

The daily average [of vaccination] was around 3.50 lakh in February, but it has risen to around 15 lakh in March.

The minister said that the central government was monitoring the recent spike in Covid-19 cases in several parts of the country. He said that the Centre was in touch with states where numbers are going up. "States are taking their call as per their past experience," he said.

He also stated that the central government was keeping an eye on the recent increase in Covid-19 cases across the country.
