Indian Railways Proposes to Connect Guwahati, Jammu with Bullet Train

Guwahati: Indian Railways have proposed to extend bullet train corridors and introduce new ones including Guwahati in the Northeast and Jammu in the North.

The Ministry of Railways has come up with the Draft National Rail Plan (NRP). According to this draft, several cities across India will be connected via bullet trains by 2021. The draft NRP proposes to extend the bullet train corridors and introduce new ones to bring major cities with tourism and economic potential on the high-speed rail map.

Under the draft NRP, some high-density passenger routes have been identified for introduction of bullet trains. A new bullet train corridor from Patna to Guwahati via Katihar and New Jalpaiguri. The new corridor is expected to help connect Guwahati to the Delhi-Agra-Kanpur-Lucknow-Varanasi bullet train corridor.

According to the draft NRP, some of the highly utilized corridors for passenger trains include the Delhi Guwahati via Lucknow, Delhi-Mumbai via Kota Ratlam, and Gorakhpur Delhi-Kolkata via Kanpur,Prayagraj, Mughalsarai.

The already proposed high-speed rail corridors, as part of the National Infrastructure Pipeline (NIP), are:

  1. Mumbai- Ahmedabad.
  2. Delhi– Agra– Lucknow- Varanasi.
  3. Delhi– Chandigarh– Amritsar.
  4. Delhi– Udaipur- Ahmedabad.
  5. Mumbai– Nasik- Nagpur
  6. Mumbai - Hyderabad.
  7. Chennai– Bengaluru – Mysore

    The National Rail Plan will be a common platform for all future infrastructural, business and financial planning of the Railways. The plan is being circulated among various Ministries for their views now. The aim is to finalise the Final plan by January 2021.
