The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has decided to organise the upcoming edition of Indian Premier League in United Arab Emirates (UAE). IPL chairman Brijesh Patel confirmed this information on Tuesday, July 21. The board has written to the government seeking permission to hold the tournament in UAE and are awaiting the go-ahead.

Patel did not confirm the dates for the tournament, but as reported recently, the BCCI has decided the window between September 26 to November 7 for the IPL match, which will comprise of 60 matches. But the broadcasters wish to organise the match from September 26 to November 14 to make the most out of the Diwali weekend. He further added that the BCCI had been waiting for the ICC to formally postpone the men's T20 World Cup this year, which has happened now, and freed up a window for the tournament.

Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah would be the three main venues. It is understood that the franchises are yet to be formally informed about the tournament being shifted out of India.

The BCCI had postponed the IPL in the month of April due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Although the board had intended to host the IPL in India, the pandemic's rapid spread has over the last few months has made that unfeasible. With officially more than a million Covid-19 infections confirmed, India now ranks third on the list of active cases worldwide.

Boards from various countries offered to host the tournament in their respective countries including Sri Lanka and UAE. Last month the Emirates Cricket Board had offered to host the tournament in UAE, stating that they had the required infrastructure for it.

As of now, the BCCI will look to submit plans for a bio-secure venue and the process of bringing the players, ensuring their health and safety amidst the rapid growth of Covid-19 cases.
