AGARTALA: Close on the heels of chief minister Biplab Kr Deb claiming that crime rate has declined manifold in Tripura, two minor girls were allegedly gangraped by eight people, including a juvenile, in Tripura's Khowai district on Tuesday and another woman allegedly raped and murdered in her own home in Sepahijala district on Monday.

The two girls (aged 14 and 15) and their two friends went for a walk in the Khatiabari area on Monday night, where six others were waiting, according to a police officer from the Champahawr police station.

At midnight, the two girls returned home and told their families that they had been raped.

The accused have been identified as Jaggu Debbarma, Bimal Debbarma, Mikel Debbarma, Rishita Debbarma, Bikash Debbarma, Nitesh Debbarma, Jewel Debbarma and Biresh Debbarma, all of whom are between 19 and 22 years old.

The police swung into action after the two's families lodged complaints and the accused were arrested.

The accused have been charged under Sections 341, 376 (D), 506 and 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act. They'll be produced in court today,” a senior police officer said.

The girls were taken to Khowai District Hospital for medical examinations and the case is being investigated, the officer added.

Earlier on Monday evening, a woman's body was recovered in a pool of blood in her own home at Paschim Para of Nalchar in Tripura's Sepahijala district.

The middle-aged woman has been named as the victim.

The body was recovered half-naked when the police arrived. The villagers believe she was raped and murdered.

The victim’s husband passed away 15 years ago. Five years ago, their only daughter was married off and the woman used to live alone in her house.

The woman is believed to have died as a result of attacks with a sharp weapon in her abdomen, according to the preliminary investigation.

Five murders have been registered in Tripura over the past week.
