GUWAHATI: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today flagged off as many as five Inland Water Transport (IWT) vessels to be pressed into services in Guwahati, Dhubri, and Majuli districts.

CM Sarma inaugurated these vessels at Lachit Ghat in Fancy Bazaar in Guwahati.

In light of the suspension of single-engine ferry services following the Nimatighat boat accident in Jorhat's Nimatighat on September 8, these vessels will improve the institutional framework for water transport and develop ferry services.

Taking to Twitter CM Sarma wrote, "Pleased to have flagged off 5 IWT vessels to be pressed into services in Guwahati, Dhubri & Majuli. It will improve institutional framework for water transport & develop ferry services, in view of discontinuation of single engine ferry services following the

Under Inland Water Transport, these ships will travel from Guwahati to Kuruwa, Nimatighat to Kamalabari, and another to Dhubri. Guwahati and Majuli will be served by the rescue ships.

The new ships are the MV Sonai, MV Lohit, MV Pratima, SDB Vikrant, and SDB Vishal.

 

The state government will buy another 5 Ro-pax ships and will provide Rs. 90 crore in financial assistance for double engine ferries, said CM Sarma during the ships' inauguration.

He also stated that the ferries would be subjected to a fitness test.
