"Justice for Parag Bhuyan" slogans ring out across Assam after "mysterious" death of journalist

KAKOPOTHAR: The death of journalist Parag Bhuyan has left a pall of gloom over Assam. The media fraternity, still in a state of shock, has expressed its condolences and there have been allegations that the journo -- known for his work in exposing corruption in Upper Assam -- was murdered for diving too deep into the web of deceit and corruption.

Issuing a statement today, the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) demanded a CBI inquiry into the alleged killing of the journalist. On 13 November, the Grand Old Party intends to stage a massive protest against this incident. Prominent Congress leaders from the Upper Assam including several former MPs and Ministers will visit the bereaved family to offer their respects.

Nitumoni Saikia, the Editor-in-Chief of Praditin Time, issued a note wherein he pointed to the "mysterious" nature of the journalist's demise.

Saikia further stated that the 'Pratidin Time' team suspects it is a "planned murder" and demanded a detailed inquiry into the incident. He further sought justice for the bereaved family of Parag Bhuyan.

Samarjyoti Bezbarua, the General Secretary of the Asom Sangrami Mancha, mourning the demise of the scribe, demanded a probe into his death. Staging a protest in Guwahati's Rajgarh locality, several organizations demanded that the 'mysterious death' of the prominent journo be properly probed. Several leading activists of the state -- including Manjit Mahanta and Mira Borthakur -- also joined the protests. Jointly, the activists raised slogans seeking justice for the alleged murder of the journalist.

According to reports, the vehicle that caused the accident belongs to a person hailing from Samaguri in Arunachal Pradesh’s Namsai.

Police personnel today went to Namsai and managed to apprehend the Tata Xenon vehicle bearing Reg. No. AS 23 BC 7881 along with its driver and helper and brought them to Namsai Police Station. The driver was identified as James Murha, hailing from Doodooma in Upper Assam. The driver and his helper have been arrested and further investigations are on.
