New Delhi, March 10, 2020:

Former Union Power Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia has quit Congress, thereby prompting the resignation of as many as 19 MLAs from the Madhya Pradesh assembly, which has led to a political crisis in the state.

Scindia also met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, paving way for his joining the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) hours after quitting Congress.

While the Congress has officially expelled the eighteen-year old party leader on grounds of “anti-party activities”, Scindia’s resignation letter says he has resigned from the primary membership of the Congress.

Scindia’s resignation letter addressed to Congress president Sonia Gandhi stated, “Having been a primary member of the Congress party for the last 18 years, it is now time for me to move on. I am tendering my resignation from the primary membership of the Indian National Congress and as you well know, this is a path that has been drawing itself out over the last year.”

Congress’ state after the resignation of its leaders and members in a day has drawn the attention of all the major political parties. Experts opine that this can be a turning point in the tussle between Congress veterans and younger leaders.
