Guwahati, May 27, 2019:

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has announced the name of their party candidate who will contest the upcoming Rajya Sabha election and the name of the BJP contender is: Kamakhya Prasad Tasa.

Yes, the former Lok Sabha MP from Jorhat will contest one of the two Rajya Sabha seats in the upcoming election.

Tasa did not contest the election this time and Topon Kumar Gogoi contested from Jorhat in his stead, managing to secure his victory with a handsome margin of votes.

Meanwhile, there had been speculation that Ram Vilas Paswan or some other Union Minister might contest the Rajya Sabha election from Assam, but these rumors were put to rest by Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who stated that both the seats will be contested by the local Assamese: one from the BJP party, and one from its allies in the region, the AGP.

Meanwhile, former Rajya Sabha MP Birendra Prasad Baishya will contest the election from the AGP party.

The Rajya Sabha election will be held on June 7.

With a BJP government now at the helm and the party enjoying a strong majority in the state assembly, its candidates are likely to win the two seats.

The BJP also named its candidates for the MLC election for one seat each in Bihar and Maharashtra. It has fielded Radha Mohan Sharma from Bihar and Pruthvi Raj Deshmukh from Maharashtra.

It may be mentioned that Kamakhya Prasad Tasa is well-known for working for the welfare of tea tribes in the State of Assam.
