Kamala Harris makes history as first woman of colour US Vice President

Kamala Harris made history by becoming the first woman Vice President of the United States of America.

Harris, a California senator of Indian and Jamaican heritage, is the first woman of mixed race to hold such a position in the White House.

Though she did run for President in the 2020 Democratic primary, she struggled to gain traction in the field and dropped out of the race months before Biden was named the party’s presidential nominee.

Harris was born in Oakland, California, and is the child of immigrant parents.

Although she rarely discussed her thoughts on her racial heritage in detail, she has frequently described her late mother, Shyamala Gopalan, who was born in India, as a mentor.

Prime Minister of India, Modi also congratulated Kamala Harris saying her victory is "a matter of immense pride not just for your chittis, but also for all Indian-Americans."

In India, Women in Thulasendrapuram village in Tiruvarur district of Tamil Nadu, the native village of US vice president-elect Kamala Harris, drew a special colourful 'rangoli' to congratulate her on sunday, The message says, 'Congratulations Kamla Harris, pride of our village,' along with 'Vanakkam America'.

In addition to this, locals in Thulasendrapuram celebrated her win by putting up posters, distributing sweets, and burning firecrackers.
