NEW DELHI: Popular former student leader Kanhaiya Kumar and Gujarat's Dalit leader Jignesh Mevani have joined the Congress party formally at the ll India Congress Committee headquarters in New Delhi in the presence of party leader Rahul Gandhi.

"I joined Congress because I believe Congress is a belief, not party or people. This is the oldest and most democratic party of India. Today not only me but each one of us feels that we have to save Congress to save our nation," said Kanhaiya Kumar addressing the press.

Kumar was earlier with the Communist Party of India (CPI) which he joined ahead of the 2019 general election.

"If we do not save the ship then will not be able to save boats," Kumar added.

Kumar also thanked CPI for educating and preparing him on politics and making him eligible to go forward.

Mevani, an independent MLA from Gujarat's Vadgam constituency, said, "What started in Gujarat now spread across the country. Our constitution is getting burned in the roads of Delhi, an attack on our idea of India, an attack on its democratic nature. Delhi and Nagpur together spreading a systematic hatred across the country. I want to stop that not as a politician but as a citizen of India. To do so I want to stand with them who has given us freedom from Britishers."

Mevani also informed that he has not joined Congress formally as he is an independent MLA and if he joins another party he will not be able to continue as a legislative assembly member.

Mevani is a lawyer and former journalist and Congress' one of the key people to poll arithmetic next year in the state.

Mevani to contest next year election on a Congress symbol and ticket from Vadgam.
