NEW DELHI: Kanhaiya Kumar, Communist Party of India (CPI) leader from Bihar, and Rashtriya Dalit Adhikar Manch (RDAM) MLA Jignesh Mevani from Gujarat are expected to join the Congress on September 28 in New Delhi.

"I will be joining the Indian National Congress along with Kanhaiya Kumar on September 28," Mevani told news agency PTI.

It was previously announced that Rahul Gandhi would induct the two young leaders into the party on Gandhi Jayanti, October 2.

The induction has been postponed until September 28, the date coincides with the birth anniversary of Shaheed Bhagat Singh.

Hardik Patel, the Gujarat Congress's working president, will also be in Delhi for the event.

According to reports, In response to a question about whether they would join in the presence of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, the Dalit activist and MLA from Gujarat's Vadgam district Mewani stated that " That would be the party's decision."

Mevani could be named functioning president of the Congress' state unit.

Kanhaiya Kumar has already met with Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi several times to discuss his role in the party.

He contested for Lok Sabha in 2019 from Begusarai but was defeated by BJP's Giriraj Singh.

Meanwhile, Congress is hoping that a ferocious group of young people in its ranks will shake up the voter base that the Narendra Modi-led Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) now has in Bihar.
