Karbis Demand 100% Job Reservation for STs in Diphu Medical College

Diphu, December 2, 2019:

Many local bodies of Karbi Anglong have launched an indefinite protest in Diphu with the demand of 100% job reservation for the ST (H) people, belonging to the region, mostly inhabited by indigenous Karbis.

The Karbis have alleged that although job interviews were held at the newly launched Diphu medical college & Research Institute to fill the vacant posts, very few locals were selected. Condemning this, many local organizations have launched an indefinite strike at the Ru-Semson Sing Ingti Memorial Park, which was held on Monday.

The different organizations' demands are: to secure 100% 3rd grade and 4th grade seats reservation for the hill tribes and to recall the interview, which was recently held.

The protest was conducted just ahead of Assam Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma's visit, and it has been reported that the protesters have been detained.

Representatives from the Karbi Students Association, All India Karbi Students' Union, Karbi Longri-North Cachar Hills, Ex. UPDS Welfare Society, Karbi Students & Youth Council, Karbi Farmer Association, among others, are taking part in the indefinite strike.

It may be mentioned here that Assam Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma visited Diphu Medical College on Monday.

Biswa Sarma, who was accompanied by Karbi Anglong CEM Tuliram Ronghang, stopped by to overlook the ongoing repair work of the NH 36 at Longnit. He also visited Diphu Medical College and Hospital to ensure that construction is completed within the stipulated timeframe.

During his visit, Biswa Sarma also revealed that Inpatient Care Department (IPD) facilities will start from December, 8 2019.
