Big B quizzes KBC contestant about Assam CM's nickname ‘Mama'; moment goes viral

GUWAHATI: The popularity of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma's moniker of ‘Mama' (maternal uncle) knows no bounds as is evidenced by it being asked to a contestant of the popular quiz show 'Kaun Banega Crorepati' (KBC).

According to reports, the question was asked by show host Amitabh Bachchan on this Sunday's edition of the event, with the contestant's answer coming prompt and quick -- perhaps acting as a testimony to Sarma's pan India popularity.

Bachchan asked the contestant, “By which of these names, is the chief minister of Assam, often addressed in the state?” with options of Chacha, Mama, Tau, and Kaka.

Pictures and videos of the historic 'Mama' KBC moment are now spreading rapidly on social media platforms across Assam.

According to reports, Sarma received this moniker after students reached Sarma during one of his cycle rallies and asked, “Mama, when will you give us Bullet motorcycles?” The title stuck and has been regularly used in memes about the current CM.

Sarma, often referred to as the 'Chanakya of Northeast' by dint of his role in the Northeast Democratic Alliance (NEDA), of which he is the convenor, is notable for his ability to manage successful political campaigns in difficult terrains, as well as his administrative and governance skills.

A former member of the Indian National Congress political party, Sarma crossed the floor to join the Bharatiya Janata Party on 23 August 2015.

After serving as minister in several administrations, he finally ascended to the post of Chief Minister in 2021 after a hard fought election win against the combined forces of the Congress and AIUDF.
