Guwahati, January 20, 2020:

The Kerala cabinet has decided that the National Population Register (NPR) will not be implemented in the state and that Census will be conducted as per norms.

The decision of Kerala government, led by Pinarayi Vijayan, has come after it moved the Supreme Court against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act or CAA and passed a resolution against it.

Earlier, Punjab had also decided to stand against the implementation of CAA in the state. It may be mentioned here that the Kerala General Administration Department had directed all its officials to ensure that there was no mention of NPR during the initial communications on Census 2021.

On Sunday, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan had lashed out at the central government for CAA, National Register of Citizens (NRC) and NPR and said that the state would uphold the values of the Constitution but would never implement the same.

While addressing a protest rally, Vijayan said, “Many people had doubts when Kerala declared that we will not implement the CAA. We all need to understand that all laws of the country must be in accordance with the Constitution. If a law is ultra vires, it won’t stand.”
