Meghalaya Chief Minster Conrad K Sangma on Sunday met Union Minister Kiren Rijiju to discuss "various issues" including the hosting of the upcoming National Games which are to be held in the Northeastern state on 2022.

Minister of State (Independent Charge) of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sport, Rijiju took to social media platform Twitter to announce his meeting with the Meghalaya Chief Minister. He tweeted: "Glad to meet the dynamic chief Minister of Meghalaya Conrad Sangma ji and his Minister colleagues. We discussed about various issues including the coming National Games 2022 to be held in Meghalaya for which we are determined to make it best ever!"

Sangma also took to Twitter to inform about his meeting with the Union Sports Minister. Taking to Twitter, he wrote: "Had a fruitful discussion with Hon’ble MoS Sh. Kiren Rijiju ji with cabinet colleagues. We are very glad with your firm commitment to ensure full cooperation for the upcoming National Games 2022 in Meghalaya."

It may be mentioned that on June 11, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Tuesday inspected the site for National Games 2022 at Dalmagre near Tura town in Meghalaya. According to a post on the official Twitter handle of the Chief Minister, a ‘robust plan’ is being drawn to fructify hosting of the Games in Meghalaya, and the Northeastern state’s administration is pulling out all the stops to ensure that the games go smoothly.

The Meghalaya CM also interacted with the village head of Dalmagre and it’s adjoining area with regards to hosting of the National Games in 2022 in Meghalaya in presence of Sports Minister Banteidor Lyngdoh, Home Minister James Sangma and others, including senior officials of the Meghalaya Government.

It may be mentioned that the State animal clouded leopard is chosen to be the mascot for the National Games 2022, which coincide with the 50th year of the creation of the State.

A  total of approximately 114.34 acres of land has been identified for critical infrastructure for the national games. “The Master Plan will be compiled by the Director Sports and Youth Affairs department and submitted to the Chairman of National Games Organising Committee who is also the Chief Minister (Conrad Sangma) in the first week of May,” the sports minister had said.

It may be mentioned that Meghalaya will be the third northeastern state after Manipur and Assam hosted the National Games in 1999 and 2007, respectively.

It had co-hosted the 2016 South Asian Games with its neighbour Assam. An estimated 14,450 athletes and officials are expected to visit Meghalaya during the flagship event.
