Guwahati, February 8, 2019:

The Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) staged mass demonstrations in Guwahati today to protest Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the state. Akhil Gogoi, leader of the organization, has been mobilizing the people of the state to protest the PM’s visit due to the BJP Government’s intention to amend the Citizenship Act of 1955.

The horde of KMSS protestors took to the streets in large numbers and confronted the PM’s convoy on its way to ‘Raj Bhawan’ in Kharguli despite the authorities’ best efforts to keep protestors at bay. Chants of “Narendra Modi go back” were raised by the protestors in unison, as they raised black flags to express the frustration over the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016.

Addressing the press earlier in the day, the peasant leader Gogoi had said that cementing the Bill is one of the BJP’s topmost priorities before the Lok Sabha elections as it will increase their voting base in West Bengal, one of the key battleground states. “Modi has come to beg for votes from the people of Assam as the BJP’s condition in the Northeast is truly pathetic”, said Gogoi.
