Guwahati, August 23, 2019:

Ladakh MP Jamyang Tsering Namgyal has appealed the Central government to declare the recently made Union Territory as a tribal area.

According to him, since 98 percent of Ladakh’s population is mainly tribal, it should get the ‘tribal status’ under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution.

It is to be mentioned that the Sixth Schedule provides the northeastern states such as Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura, and Mizoram to administer the tribal areas by setting up autonomous district and regional councils.

The MP submitted a memorandum to the Tribal Affairs Minister Arjun Munda seeking for ‘tribal status’ saying that the biggest concern for its people was to protect their land and identity.

Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC) Chairman Gyal P. Wangyal also stated that the region’s demand was to protect the interests of the tribal population by bringing it under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution.

Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Council Chairman, Haji Anayat Ali, also discussed the issues regarding land acquisition, job reservation and other concerns of the youth of Ladakh.

Tribal Affairs Minister Arjun Munda, while addressing the gathering, promised that he would do whatever was required to protect the interests of the Ladakh population.
