DISPUR: A leopard cub was run over by a speeding vehicle on the approach road of Guwahati’s Saraighat bridge yesterday night.

The deceased leopard cub was one-and-a-half years old, said forest personnel.

Immediately after noticing the incident, the traffic police of Jalukbari informed the Forest Department of Khanamukh Beat Office.

The forest officials rushed to the spot and took the dead cub along with them.

According to sources, the leopard cub died on the spot. The authorities have not been able to trace the driver yet.

According to forest personnel, the cub might have come either from the nearby Kamakhya temple hilltop or the Jalukbari notified Reserve Forest.

Post mortem of the cub was conducted today and it was later cremated by the forest officials.

“The post-mortem report revealed that the cub suffered a profuse brain hemorrhage caused by an injury to the head," said a forest official.

The hillocks encircling Guwahati are natural habitats of leopards.

The city shares its boundary with the Amchang Wildlife Sanctuary, and a number of notified Reserve Forests — Fatasil, Jalukbari, Kalapahar, Gorbhanga, etc.
