Less than 1% of women in Nagaland consume alcohol, reveals study

KOHIMA: Women hardly consume alcohol in Nagaland, a national health survey of households has revealed. According to the fifth National Family Health Survey (NFHS-5) released by Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan on December 12, less than 1% of women in the state consume alcohol.

Women aged 15 years and above who consume alcohol (percentage-wise) decreased from 3.3 in NFHS-4 (2015-16) to a negligible 0.9 in 2019-20. The percentage of consumers was lower in rural areas (0.7) as compared to urban areas (1.5).

Although the number was higher among the males, the number has nosedived compared to earlier surveys, it has been revealed.

24% of men aged 15 years and above consume alcohol in Nagaland, as per the survey. However, it was a decline from 38.8% in 2015-16 (NFHS-4). The consumption was 26.8% in urban areas and 22.5% in rural areas.

At the same time, ‘men who use any kind of tobacco’ have declined considerably during the two survey period, but consumption remains high among the male population. A total of 48.4% male respondents (aged 15 years and above) revealed use of use any kind of tobacco in 2029-20. In 2015-16, however, the number was much higher (69.2%).

Among the females, it declined from 27.4 in 2015-16 to 12.6 in 2019-20.

The NFHS-5 fieldwork for Nagaland was conducted from July 15, 2019, to December 6, 2019, by Research and Development Initiative (RDI) Pvt. Ltd. Information was gathered from 10,112 households, 9,694 women, and 1,456 men, as per the report.
