New Delhi, October 3, 2019:

As many as 7,036 illegal immigrants have been rescued from January 1 to September 30 last year as stated by the Libyan Navy.

In an official statement issued by Libyan Navy, 11 bodies of illegal immigrants had been recovered off Libyan shores by the end of September.

Libya has become a preferred departure point for refugees because of insecurity and chaos in the North African country following the 2011 uprising.

Migrant shelters in Libya are populated with people who were rescued at sea or arrested by Libyan security services.

The UN High Commissioner for Refugees and the International Organization for Migration have demanded to close the immigration reception centres in Libya. They stressed that the country is not a safe port for the disembarkation of immigrants.
