GUWAHATI: Lovlina Borgohain (23), Olympic boxing bronze medallist from Assam was offered the post of deputy SP in the Assam police by the state government.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also presented the 'Assam's pride' with Rs 1 crore cash reward today in the felicitation ceremony here in Guwahati.

CM Sarma also stated that the state government has decided to give Lovlina Borgohain, the first person to bring an Olympic medal to the state, a Rs one lakh monthly scholarship until the Paris Olympics in 2024 because "she has set her sights on winning a gold there."

On arriving in Assam, after winning a bronze medal in welterweight boxing at the recently concluded Tokyo Olympics 2020, the Olympian apologised to the state for not being able to bring home a gold medal.

She said, "The entire state of Assam along with the country prayed for me, But I could not get the gold. I am sorry. I give my word that I will get gold in Paris Olympics."

CM sarma further stated that a road in Guwahati will also be named after Lovlina Borgohain.

As a token of gratitude from the people of Assam, four coaches - Prashanta Das, Padum Barua, Sandhya Gurung, and Rafael Gamavaska - who were a part of Lovlina's boxing journey will be honoured with Rs 10 lakh each, CM Sarma added.

Moreover, the Chief Minister said that to groom many more rural talents, a sports complex with a boxing academy will be built in the Sarupathar constituency, which includes her village of Baro Mukhiya in the Golaghat district of Assam.

"Lovlina has inscribed her name in gold in the pages of the history of Assam by bringing the state its first (Olympic) medal. "We are very proud of her, and I congratulate and thank her on behalf of the entire state," CM Sarma said.
