MUMBAI: Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh today resigned "on moral grounds," hours after the Bombay High Court directed the CBI to conduct a preliminary investigation into allegations levelled against him by former Mumbai police chief Param Bir Singh within 15 days.

For weeks, Mr. Deshmukh had resisted calls for his resignation, claiming that he had done "nothing wrong."

"It is not right for him to remain on the job now that the CBI is investigating him," a leader of Deshmukh's Nationalist Congress Party said.

In a petition, Param Bir Singh, who was recently replaced as Mumbai Police Commissioner, says he was singled out because he protested to Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray about Anil Deshmukh, alleging bribery and illegal transfers, among other items.
